Have you heard the phrase, you can't improve what you don't measure? That is true as a business owner, and it is also true for those on your team. How does your team measure their performance? How do they improve this year to what they accomplished last year? How do you know you are winning?  In sports, they keep score and so should you in your practice.  Knowing the score, knowing your numbers is how you can know you and your team are winning.

I spoke to a dentist recently who told me that he was not concerned with making more money, he was making enough and I can understand not wanting to complicate things when something is working. I don't want to complicate your life more either! I want more grace, more ease, more joy and more flow for you and your team. If that equates to more money, and it will, then so be it!

Winning, and knowing you are winning in all aspects of life, feels pretty good. My mission is to help practices to thrive. What does thriving look like for you, for your practice, for your team and for your patients?

“Today I shall behave as if this is the day I will be remembered.” — Dr Seuss

1. You have a plan for your practice

You have a vision, it is written down and you have shared it with your team and they know how to help you achieve it. They have bought into the mission because they are connected to it and benefit from it! It isn’t fun to play a game when you don’t know what the objective is.

2. You have assembled a dream team

When you enjoy the people you work with, everything is better. We spend so much time with our team, we can't skimp on assembling the right people for the right position. While we are in "the great resignation" we can't let desperation impair our hiring process. Having clearly defined roles and clearly defined expectations and finding people who share our values is the foundation to a dental dream team.

3. You have Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) you track

What is a KPI? KPI stands for key performance indicator, a quantifiable measure of performance over time for a specific objective. KPIs provide targets for teams to shoot for, milestones to gauge progress, and insights that help people across the organization make better decisions. Having defined KPIs for each position that relate to the vision is the impetus to an engaged team.

4. You have meetings that matter

The word "meeting" tends to make people cringe. The reason is so many meetings are ineffective and wasteful. Time is money, so many owners skimp on important meetings because the meetings they are holding are more like gab sessions and are run more like cooler conversations. Do you hold a morning huddle, or have staff meetings, on a regular basis? Do you hold regular one-on-one meetings with team members? I believe meetings are so important and key to having an optimized team ready for productivity and growth.
